The Uptown Theatre, which opened 100 years ago, is one of America’s largest and most lavish movie palaces. it’s been vacant and unused for more than 40 years. Authors Robert Loerzel and James A. Pierce will talk about their new book on the history of The Uptown Theatre. Using original records and firsthand accounts, they tell a story of dreamers, a changing neighborhood, and a nation stepping into a new world.

Presenter: Jessica Mlinaric is the author of Secret Chicago, Chicago Scavenger, and the upcoming Secret Illinois. She has also contributed to multiple editions of the Fodor's Chicago guidebook.

Brick Architecture in Chicago

Will Quam is a photographer of architecture, a writer and a researcher. He has been called a "brick whisperer" and has been conducting tours of Chicago neighborhoods with a special emphasis on brick, the omnipresent material of so many of our structures. He is convinced that nothing is boring and excitement can be found in anything---even bricks.
